new_picture.pngIn the three years lifetime of the Western Balkans Environmental Programme, 11 hot spots sites have been remediated. Recognizing the importance of sharing information and experiences to strengthen capacities at the regional level, two publications have been prepared: Case Studies on Remediation of Environmental Hot Spots in the Western  Balkans and Final Report 2007-2010.

“Case Studies on Remediation of Environmental Hot Spots in the Western Balkans” is the publication on 9 “case studies” of environmental hot spots in the Western Balkans which aims to capture and share the information collected over 36 months in cleaning up sites or improving infrastructure for the benefit of the community and environment.  It covers the costs, timelines, difficulties and progress made in conducting chemical cleanups, improving waste water and energy infrastructure, containment of hazardous waste and hazard reduction works at mine sites in the transitional countries that make up the Western Balkans. It also includes valuable information on the companies involved and the institutional players. The information provided in this publication is based on the physical works conducted to quickly address important environmental problems in the region and not for the purposes of scientific or research-based projects. Presentation of the information is therefore provided as a start-to-finish chronology of each of the case studies with the relevant costs, timings and steps required to conduct the works. The publication covers 9 of the 11 locations treated, which are grouped into 6 separate sections:

Ø  Air Pollution and Energy

Ø  Water Pollution and Waste

Ø  Chemical Cleanup and Destruction

Ø  Metal Recovery from Mine Waste and Water

Ø  Mine Dust and Water Control

Ø  Containment and Rapid Risk Reduction of Mine Tailings and Wastes

The “Final Report 2007-2010” publication is a summary of the results achieved in each of the countries/territories as well as at the regional level in the period from September 2007 to September 2010. Aware that the impact of the results can be hardly visible immediately after the programme implementation, this publication aims at comparing the baseline situation in each of the programme constituents, with the situation in the closing period of the programme when this publication was created.Divided into seven sections (regional component and six participating countries/territories), the Final Report provides a summary of the activities that have been implemented in the last 36 months, at a cost of approximately USD 20 million (including donor funds and countries’/territories’ contributions), the results achieved, partners involved, as well as lessons learned during the programme implementation.
