activities_2_small.jpgRegional Expert Meeting took place on November 18th-19th in Budva, Montenegro. The Expert Meeting hosted the environmental experts from six countries/ territories involved in the Western Balkans Environmental Programme, programme beneficiaries and partners such as representatives of the national and local governments, management authorities of the remediated sites, civil society organizations, etc., as well as representatives of the international community. During the meeting participants had an opportunity discuss the importance of regional cooperation in reducing pollution and remediating the “brownfield” sites located in the Western Balkans, to present the results and the achievements of the Western Balkans Environmental Programme, and to discuss the national challenges and priorities, as well as next steps for further regional cooperation in this area.

The expert meeting was divided into two parts. The first part was dedicated to presenting the results of the WBEP in all participating countries/ territories as well as the regional component. Visual segment included presentation of the results achieved through short movies, pictures as well as direct communication with the relevant NPCs. Important segment of the visual presentation was the interactive presentation of the database of practitioners which was given by the Programme Associate for Capacity building. The evening ended with a cocktail.

The second part of the expert meeting was divided into two working sessions. In the first working session emphasize was on the importance of regional cooperation in addressing environmental and brownfield issues. In the following panel discussion more was said about “Brownfields” in Western Balkans, current state and next steps; UNDP’s experience, results and lessons learnt in addressing environmental “hot spots” under the WBEP, and Regional Environmental Cooperation in the Western Balkans - current and planned efforts. The first session ended with presentation of conclusions/ recommendations from the panel discussions. The second working session started with results achieved in remediating environmental  hot spots in the Western Balkans  under the WBEP, identified national challenges and priorities and suggested next steps with regard to addressing “brownfields”. The panel discussion was followed by short interventions from the panelists, representatives of countries/ territories involved in the Western Balkans Environmental Programme, and from the WBEP Chief Technical Advisor.
