newen.jpgRegional Programme Manager and Chief Technical Advisor of the Western Balkans Environmental Programme had a meeting with the Project Managers of the NEWEN Project on 9th February, in UNDP Montenegro. Purpose of the meeting was to exchange information about the on-going activities and explore the possibilities for future cooperation between the two programmes. In addition, Regional PMU received an invitation from the NEWEN project to propose the representative for the NEWEN Advisory Board.

Several issues of common interest were discussed, including possible linkages between the environmental hot spots remediated within the WBEP and future NEWEN activities related to development of MSc, monitoring etc.In relation to the NEWEN Advisory Board, it was explained that the role of the Advisory Board is to provide advice on the implementation of the programme, i.e. to provide feedback on project activities and participation in local activities. Members of the Advisory Board are representatives from: the Western Balkans Universities, Regional Programme on Environment Western Balkans, Ministries of Environment/Environment Protection and the Ministries for Education and Science from Western Balkans countries. Regular communication between the Advisory Board members on project progress and planning will be organized via e-mail and the web site NEWEN runs from October 2008 to May 2011 and is financially supported by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs through Regional Programme on Environment, Western Balkans. The central objective of the NEWEN programme is to develop a network and trans-boundary cooperation in the field of environmental management between the six participating universities in the Western Balkans and the participating universities and institutes in the Netherlands. The cooperation aims to:
  •   Contribute to environmental capacity building at the Western Balkans (WB) universities through a number of activities such as professional trainings of university staff, curriculum improvements and providing number of MSc scholarships for post-graduate students to study in the Netherlands.
  •  Improve information exchange and cooperation between the participating universities and institutes.
  •  Develop future research and trainings programmes with participation of members of the WB and Dutch consortium.
  • -Contribute to problem analysis and the development of strategies and policies with respect to a number of environmental ‘hot spots’ that are high on the regional agenda and that are remediated through the Western Balkans Environmental Hot Spots Programme implemented by the United Nations Development Programme.More information about NEWEN project and the universities involved in the programme can be found at www.newenproject.org
